January 8 – March 20, 2021

CVA is proud to present Zanele Muholi: Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness这是一个由伦敦Autograph公司组织、rensame Mussai策划的国际巡回展览.

Their ongoing series Somnyama Ngonyama, which translates as ‘Hail The Dark Lioness’ in isiZulu, one of the official languages of South Africa, playfully employs the conventions of classical painting, fashion photography, 每一幅黑白自画像都提出了关于社会正义的关键问题, human rights, and contested representations of the Black body.

My reality is that I do not mimic being Black; it is my skin, and the experience of being Black is deeply entrenched in me.

Throughout the series, Muholi皮肤的黑肤色(通过后期制作的对比度增强而增强), becomes the focal point of a profound, multilayered interrogation of beauty, pride, desire, self-care, well-being, 每天都有许多相互关联的恐惧症和歧视,比如同性恋恐惧症, transphobia, xenophobia, racism, and sexism, to name but a few.

Gazing defiantly at the camera, Muholi

Renée Mussai, exhibition curator and Autograph’s Senior Curator and head of Curatorial & Collections, explains that Somnyama Ngonyama presents “一个引人注目的、有远见的身份马赛克,一个精致的自我帝国. Inviting us into a multilayered, visceral conversation, each photograph in the series, each visual inscription, 每一个对抗性的叙述都描绘了一个与无数其他人进行深刻对话的自我:隐含的性别, non-conforming, culturally complex and historically grounded Black bodies.
